Mirehouse, John, of Sosgill in Loweswater (-1664)

It is possible that this is the John Mirehouse of Sosgill in the Protestation, though it could as easily be a father. One of them received a bequest in the 1645 will of Isabel Pearson of Mockerkin.

Small farmer. The value of his crops (corn, hemp) was greater than that of his animals, but that might be the time of year (October).

This farm doesn't look viable, unless he had some other trade (e.g. weaving) - but no equipment is mentioned in the inventory - and one of his biggest debts is to a webster (weaver).

Had the inventory been smaller, he would have appeared retired. However, he is a man with a young family.

His debts at his death were almost exactly equal to his assets.

He left a widow Ellen, his executrix, and four children who were minors: Janet, Agnes, John and Thomas.

Ther are burials for three of the children: Janet (January 1679/80). Agnes (April 1682), John (October 1682).
