The Wasdales of Croglin, Ainstable & Kirkoswald

There is another family group of Wasdales in the Croglin / Ainstable / Kirkoswald district, but whether they were from the Cumberland or Westmorland clans is debatable.
It is possible that this branch of the family was descended from a Thomas Wasdale who could have been born at Wasdalehead about 1630 and who died at Croglin in May 1704. If this attribution is correct then that would make him a son of John [7] Wasdale & Jennet his wife and brother of Robert Wasdale [8]
This family eventually spread to Alston, Egremont, Staffordshire, St.Ives in Huntingdon and London. This Wasdale family group is headed by one Nicholas Wasdale (1657 -1724) and Nicholas is an important family name amongst the Wasdalehead families.
The London group were headed by a Dr.John (B: 1731 in Kirkoswald) & Mary Wasdale who moved to London via Carlisle. They had a son James born at St.Martins in the Fields in 1752 & who was granted Arms in 1803. Roy Huddlestone in his book on Cumberland Heraldry states that this family originated in Wasdalehead.
The Descendants of Thomas WASDALE (c.1630 - 1704)
First Generation
1. Thomas WASDALE, it is understood, was born in c.1630 in Wasdalehead. He married Margaret UNKNOWN in about 1650. He died on 20 May 1704 in Croglin.
Margaret UNKNOWN died on 1 April 1688 in Croglin. She and Thomas WASDALE had the following children:

Second Generation
2. Nicholas WASDALE, son of Thomas WASDALE and Margaret UNKNOWN, was born on 12 February 1656/57 in Caldbeck. He was a Fuller by trade. He married Bridget UNKNOWN in c.1670. He died on 26 September 1724 in Croglin.
Nicholas was a Fuller at Croglin Mill in 1687.
Nicholas left a Will when he died in 1724 where he mentions the following people.

4. Son James Wasdale
5. his dauhter Bridget
6. his daughter Elizabeth
7. his Wife and his son William were made his sole executors.
Bridget UNKNOWN died on 23 April 1737 in Croglin. She and Nicholas WASDALE had the following children:

Third Generation
3. William WASDALE, son of Nicholas WASDALE and Bridget UNKNOWN, was born in 1677 (approx.). He married Ann PATTIESON on 4 April 1738 in Ainstable. He married Isabel ATKINSON on 14 April 1748 in Cumwhitton.
William lived at Scarrowmonwick in Kirkoswald - 1747 to 1758 at least.
Ann PATTIESON died on 9 April 1747 in Croglin.
Isabel ATKINSON died on 19 January 1758 in Croglin.
4. Bridget WASDALE, daughter of Nicholas WASDALE and Bridget UNKNOWN, was born in 1679 (approx.). She married Joseph MULCASTER on 28 November 1715 in Croglin.
5. Thomas WASDALE, son of Nicholas WASDALE and Bridget UNKNOWN, was born in August 1681 in Croglin. He died on 11 July 1724 in Croglin.
6. Jonathon WASDALE, son of Nicholas WASDALE and Bridget UNKNOWN, was born on 13 March 1684 in Croglin.
7. John WASDALE, son of Nicholas WASDALE and Bridget UNKNOWN, was born on 26 March 1685 in Croglin. He was a Tailor & gentleman. He married Sarah CANNON on 25 June 1713 in Kirkoswald.
Sarah CANNON died on 9 December 1745 in Croglin. She and John WASDALE had the following children:

8. Nicholas WASDALE, son of Nicholas WASDALE and Bridget UNKNOWN, was born on 14 March 1686 in Croglin. He married Sarah NORTH on 12 June 1715 in Brampton.
Sarah NORTH and Nicholas WASDALE had the following children:

9. Elizabeth WASDALE, daughter of Nicholas WASDALE and Bridget UNKNOWN, was born on 25 June 1689 in Croglin. She married Jonathon DIXON on 26 November 1720 in Croglin.
10. James WASDALE, son of Nicholas WASDALE and Bridget UNKNOWN, was born on 25 August 1697 in Kirkoswald. He was a Tailor. He married Alice RICHARDSON on 4 July 1723 in Kirkoswald. His Job was 'Tailor'.
Alice RICHARDSON was born in 1686 (calculated). She died on 4 January 1781 in Kirkoswald. She and James WASDALE had the following children:

Fourth Generation
11. Thomas WASDALE, son of John WASDALE and Sarah CANNON, was born on 17 April 1714 in Kirkoswald. He died on 16 June 1715 in Kirkoswald.
12. William WASDALE, son of John WASDALE and Sarah CANNON, was born on 11 July 1718 in Kirkoswald. He died on 17 June 1728 in Kirkoswald.
13. Bridget WASDALE, daughter of John WASDALE and Sarah CANNON, was born on 27 November 1721 in Kirkoswald. She died on 29 April 1722 in Kirkoswald.
14. James WASDALE, son of John WASDALE and Sarah CANNON, was born on 16 September 1726 in Kirkoswald. He married Bridget DIXON on 25 November 1747 in Ainstable. He married Mary UNKNOWN in 1750 (approx.). He died on 24 February 1803 in Ainstable. He was buried on 26 February 1803 in Skelton.
James Wasdale of Kirkoswald, a native of Wasdalehead, where his family is said to have lived for several generations, had an only son Dr.John Wasdale of Carlisle and St.Martins in the Fields, London, who in 1803 obtained a grant of arms. CA XXII / 277 - College of arms
In October 1792 James was declared bankrupt and it was stated that he had assigned all his real estate to his son in law Joseph Hetherington a lead miner from the parish of Alston.
James was buried, aged 79, at Skelton church.
Bridget DIXON died on 8 November 1748 in Armathwaite, Ainstable. She and James WASDALE had the following children:

15. John WASDALE, son of John WASDALE and Sarah CANNON, was born on 16 July 1726 in Kirkoswald. He died on 3 September 1726 in Kirkoswald.
16. Jane WASDALE, daughter of Nicholas WASDALE and Sarah NORTH, was born on 23 May 1716 in Brampton.
17. John WASDALE, son of James WASDALE and Alice RICHARDSON, was born on 16 May 1731 in Kirkoswald. In 1770 he was a Doctor in Doctor of Mediciene. He died in London. His Job was 'Doctor'. He married Mary UNKNOWN.

18. Isabel WASDALE, daughter of James WASDALE and Bridget DIXON, was born on 8 November 1747 in Ainstable. She married Joseph HETHERINGTON on 11 December 1774 in Ainstable.
In 1774 Joseph HETHERINGTON was a Miner in Ainstable. In 1774 he was resident in Alston, tyne head.
Joseph Hetherington a miner of Tyne Head in Alston.
19. John WASDALE, son of James WASDALE and Mary UNKNOWN, was born on 31 December 1750 in Ainstable. He was a Dr. of Medicene. He died in July 1807 in Middlesex. He married Isabell UNKNOWN.
John, the son of James Wasdale of Armathwaite in Ainstable parish, was admitted as a pupil to Carlisle Grammar School on the 12 Jan.1762. He was not there 12 months later.
He left a Will that is difficult to read.

Gives all his freehold land, messuages and tenements in Cumberland and elsewhere in trust to friends Thomas Blamire (?) of Carlisle, doctor of physics, William Clifton of Little Newport Street, Westminster, chemist and druggist, and Thomas H-son Chittenden, of Greek Street, Soho, their heirs and assigns...etc etc.

22. Matthew WASDALE, son of John WASDALE and Isabell UNKNOWN, was born on 29 June 1781 in Ainstable. He was a Grocer & Tea dealer. He married Ann JACKSON in 1812 in Huntingdonshire. He died in December 1859 in St.Ives, Huntingdonshire.
Ann JACKSON was born in 1780. She died in 1814 in Huntingdonshire. She and Matthew WASDALE had the following children:

23. Mary Ann WASDALE, daughter of John WASDALE and Isabell UNKNOWN, was born in 1780. She died in 1846 in St.Ives.
Mary Ann was a business partner with her brother in St.Ives.
24. Sarah WASDALE, daughter of James WASDALE and Jane UNKNOWN, was born on 30 December 1781 in Egremont. She died on 20 March 1784 in Egremont.
25. John WASDALE, son of James WASDALE and Jane UNKNOWN, was born on 14 November 1784 in Egremont.
Seventh Generation
26. Mary Ann WASDALE, daughter of Matthew WASDALE and Ann JACKSON, was born in 1812 in St.Ives, Huntingdonshire.
