The Tysons of Birkerthwaite in Eskdale

Birkerthwaite was a hamlet of properties that were situated at the head of the Eskdale Valley close to the road between Eskdale and Ulpha.
They are actually part of the township of Birker & Austhwaite which was part of the parish of Millom.
Probably because of its remote location, and the distance from either of the valley churches, this hamlet became a centre for those people with an interest in non-conformist religions.
Birkerthwaite was therefore associated with people who were either Quakers or Baptists at different times. In 1694 the house of Edward & Ann Tysons at Birkerthwaite was granted a licence as a Quaker meeting place. There is a quaker burial ground to be found on the fell side not far from Birkerthwaite.

She died a single woman and was probably the last Tyson of Birkerthwaite.
