Thomas Woodall (alive 1628)

Thomas inherited as the oldest son, so his birth date was probably around 1565. He was, unlike his brothers, named as 'of Ullock' in the 1628 will of his brother Oswald. His father was called the 'elder' at Oswald's 1594 baptism, which implies that the younger Thomas was married by that date and so might be confused with his father. His first wife Mary was buried 20-04-1614 in Dean, and he married Ellen Robinson 27-02-1616 in Dean.

He had children: Oswald, William, Richard (baptised 07-07-1603, probably a twin dying young, as there is no further mention of him), Thomas (baptised 07-07-1603), Janet (married in 1622), an unnamed daughter (buried 23-12-1605), Margaret (baptised 23-11-1605, buried 23-05-1606), Agnes (baptised 01-05-1611), Mabel (baptised 01-05-1617, buried 25-11-1620) and Lancelot (baptised 20-01-1622).

He, rather than his son, is likely to be the 'Thomas Woodhall of Ullock' who witnessed the will of Henry Porter of Ullock in 1626.

Children

Oswald Woodall (alive 1646) of Ullock

He appointed his wife Agnes as his executrix in his 1646 will. They had children: Oswald, John, Thomas, Isabel and Agnes. There are no baptism dates because the Dean register wasn't being kept or hasn't survived.

He is listed in the Dean Protestation.

William Woodall (alive 1625)

William married 04-11-1625 in Dean to Emma Banke. He was mentioned in the 1628 will of his uncle Oswald.

He is not listed in the Dean Protestation, but may be elsewhere.

Thomas Woodall (1603-post1628)

He is mentioned in the 1628 will of his uncle Oswald.

He is not listed in the Dean Protestation, but may be elsewhere.

Janet (alive 1622) Dixon of Ullock

Janet married 03-03-1621/2 in Dean to John Dixon. He was described as 'of Ullock' in Oswald's 1628 will. She may be the Janet Dixon of Ullock with probate in 1673, but I haven't seen that yet.

Agnes (1611-post1628) Woodall

She is mentioned in Oswald's 1628 will as 'Agnes Woodhall daughter of Thomas Woodhall'. Presumably this means his niece, daughter of his brother Thomas; rather than a great-niece, daughter of his nephew Thomas. However, when mentioning his brother elsewhere in the will, he uses the term 'the said Thomas'.

Lancelot Woodall (1622-c.1661) of Ullock

Lancelot was not a forename used in the Woodhall/Woodall clan, so possibly came through his mother. He is mentioned in Oswald's 1628 will. His probate is dated 1661, though he could have died some years earlier (as 1650s administrations were often not dealt with until the Restoration). His inventory is dated 25-09-1661, and the bond 09-10-1661.

He is not listed in the Dean Protestation. This may suggest that the list was drawn up of 21+ rather than 18+, or it may be that he was living in another parish at the time.

The prizers were:  Joseph Porter, Anthony Peile, George Fearon and William Bell.

The administrator was his widow Mary. The bondsmen were Joseph Porter of Ullock, yeoman, and William Bell of Ullock, yeoman. The bond was set at £200, which was usually twice the value of the chattels. This is quite a large sum for a youngest son, but not for the eldest son of a second wife who may have inherited property. He may also have done well through maternal inheritance, or through marriage to a Porter or a Bell.

Another Lancelot Woodall of Ullock was buried 08-08-1695 in Dean, who may be his son. He had married twice: to Elizabeth, who was buried ?-01-1692 in Dean; and Katherine, who was his executrix. He had a son William, buried 16-08-1698 in Dean; and possibly a son Joseph baptised (posthumously) 27-10-1695 in Dean.
