Mirehouse of Mockerkin

Mirehouse of Mockerkin

Richard Mirehouse of Mockerkin spoke his will in 1605. He may have been the Richard Mirehouse who married Ellen Scott in 1554 in Dean, in which case he would have died in his 70s. He possibly had a brother John and a nephew John, both of Mockerkin, as the two are mentioned in documents of the period. He certainly left a widow Agnes. He appears to have had one son Richard, one unmarried daughter Ellen, and one married daughter Margaret Fox; and three grandchildren.

I haven't found anything on the son, Richard, but the records could imply that he had three sons: Richard Mirehouse of Mockerkin (died 1644), John Mirehouse of Mockerkin and James Mirehouse. It's possible, of course, that John and James descend from the two Johns above.

Richard and others were in dispute in 1641/2 with Anthony Jackson of Sosgill over property in Mockerkin and Sosgill, the details of which I haven't seen. This may throw further light.

Richard left a widow Agnes in 1644 and a daughter Elizabeth who was then a minor.

The Mirehouse male line continued in Mockerkin. This wouldn't have happened if Elizabeth were the only heiress, so one has to consider other scenarios. It may be that the line of the two Johns or of the John/James were distinct from that of Richard; or it may be that Elizabeth died and inheritance passed naturally to John/James.

A James Mirehouse had a son, Peter, and a Peter was the next properly documented occupier of a tenement in Mockerkin.
