The Family of BURNYEAT -  c. 1700 & onwards

The 1st, 2nd & 3rd Generations of Burnyeats

The Whitehaven Family of BURNYEAT originated circa 1700 in the Ennerdale & Loweswater districts of Cumberland.

PLEASE NOTE THAT SECTIONS ‘Generation 1’ AND ‘Generation 2’ HAVE BEEN REPLACED. THE ORIGINAL VERSION WAS INCORRECT.

It should be noted that according to the Burnyeat notes held at Whitehaven RO that the man who made the move to the sea port should be a John Burnyeat the son of Phillip & not Phillip son of Phillip !

These notes say:-

“The next figure in the long line of Cumberland Burnyeats to concern us is John Burnyeat, a yeoman farmer of Beckfoot in Ennerdale, whose father Philip had moved there from Loweswater in 1696 and whose lifetime spans the years between the devoted Quaker Burnyeats of Loweswater and the first recorded association of the Burnyeat family with the world of ships and the sea. The future course of the branch of the Burnyeat family with whom we are concerned was determined when John Burnyeat's son Philip (1750-1837) decided to leave the family farm at Ennerdale and seek his fortune in the neighbouring port of Whitehaven. There we first hear of him as the landlord of the White Lion Inn, which stands to this day in King Street, Whitehaven.”

It is possible that these particular Burnyeat family notes are American in origin
