The Copeland Parishes & Chapels

TABLE OF COPELAND PARISHES

This table shows the Parishes within the boundaries of the Deanery of Copeland along with their outlying Chapelries.

A significant change in the arrangement of parishes occurred in 1833 when Brigham parish and the associated chapelries were moved from Allerdale above Derwent Ward into the newly created Derwent Ward.

The large parishes of Brigham, Millom and St.Bees developed a group of district Chapelries (Chapels of Ease) in their outlying areas, This was done so as to cut down the long distances that their parishioners had to travel to celebrate the major occasions both in their families lives as well as the church calendar.

Note that Copeland contained the one Extra Parochial District of Salter & Eskatt.

The date given in brackets after the church name is the year that this church opened or was consecrated.

Churches with no date shown against it were already in existence in the 10th century.

The time periods shown in the column BTs / IGI show the years that the Bishops Transcripts (BTs) of the parish registers are available in Carlisle Record Office.

These papers were the source of the majority of the data to be found within the Copeland IGI found on the Mormon familysearch.org web site.

The dates are only given as a guide for family history researchers. A full listing of parishes and the dates covered by their registers can be found in Cumbrian Ancestors published by the Cumbria Archive Service.

Dates given for the start of the early churches are taken from ‘Christianity in Cumbria’ by Henry L. Widdup (1981)
