TYSONS of WASDALE HEAD, MARYPORT and LIVERPOOL
There have been Tyson families at Wasdale head since the very first records that are available for our inspection - 1547.
I have been studying the families of Wasdale & Eskdale for a great many years and the Census returns are sometimes helpful in resolving problems; as well as creating more. The Census returns for 1841, 1851 and 1861 were a puzzle in that there were no Tyson entries, where had they gone? The 1871 & 1881 census shows the common name of Thomas Tyson and his wife Mary Ann farming at Row Head and taking in mountain climbers as payable guests. The puzzle here is that Thomas’s birth place is given as Maryport and Mary Ann’s as Caldbeck. This raised the question - who was he? Why was he, a foreigner with a local name, making a first appearance in this small community at the age of 37 years?
This stayed a puzzle until the first of two clues appeared to allow it to be unravelled.
The background to this story is that Rowhead farm has been in the possession of one Tyson family for generations. They did not, however, purchase the freehold in the 1750-60’s with the opportunity of enfranchisement and this was true of all the farmers in Wasdale Head.
Whilst the Ritsons could be found at Rowfoot in Census years 1841 to 1881, the Tysons were not at Rowhead. There were Ritsons in 1841 and 1851, Elliots in 1861 and then Tysons from Maryport in 1871. Who were these Tysons?
So the puzzle rested until a clue came from Margaret Russell, “did you know that a William Tyson held Rowhead in 1842”. As there was no William Tyson resident in the Wasdale valley in 1841 it appeared that ownership had passed from the valley. This raised the Maryport connection - but without proof. Sometime later whilst reading the Musgrave of Wasdale Hall estate papers at Carlisle Record Office I found the sale of Rowhead farm in 1899 by a Thomas Tyson of Liverpool to John Musgrave of Wasdale Hall. Included was an abstract of the title connecting him with Thomas Tyson of Netherwasdale who died in February 1842, then, through his nephew William Tyson the eldest son of the testator’s late brother Edward Tyson and then his wife Ann, who died in November 1859, to their children Thomas, John, Sarah and Edward. This was all very interesting - but who were they?
Here was a William Tyson in 1842, so now was the time to test the Maryport connection. Checking Mannex & Whellan 1847 gives a William Tyson painter, plumber & glazier of King St.Maryport. Parson & White 1829, shows Edward Tyson at the same address, it looked promising. Checking the 1851 Census revealed William & Ann Tyson living in King St. along with their children Thomas(16), John(11), Sarah(9) and Edward(7), the same children given in the title to Rowhead farm.
Further investigations of the Parish Register led to the Family Tree given above.
Therefore the demise of the Tyson family associated with Rowhead for well over two hundred years can be described as follows. Sometime between 1830 & 1840 Thomas and Hannah Tyson left Rowhead for Brow Foot in Netherwasdale, no doubt leasing the farm to John and Mary Ritson who married in 1838 and had their first child at Rowhead in 1840. Edward, the brother of Thomas Tyson had left Wasdale and eventually set up business in Maryport and it was his grandson Thomas who benefited under his grandfather’s will. Thomas did return to the farm for 1871-81 but in common with many Cumbrians migrated to Liverpool and it was from there that the farm passed to the Musgrave family.
