Hewer, Pickering, of Lamplugh (-1672)
Hewer, Pickering, of Lamplugh (-1672)
Pickering Hewer was a much respected clergyman.
He was curate of St Bees when the protestation was made in 1641/3. The result was above the normal standard, as it listed both men and women and listed them in a systematic way. He became curate of Lamplugh and maintained the register there during the Commonwealth (which was unusual). His Lamplugh register is full of little personal touches, and Lamplugh families named their children after him.
He only marked his will, though a literate man, so he was physically frail by that time. His will is witnessed by George Lamplugh, the then Rector of Lamplugh. His probate inventory includes a largish debt to William Dickinson (Steward to the Lamplughs, another literate man who at his will five years later had to mark).
