St Bees Tithe Book 1711 to 1714

Introduction

The Tithe Book was among the effects of my mother-in-law Mrs Peg Whipp. The book which is clearly genuine is accompanied by a note from E Cartmell, but when it came from him to Peg Whipp's husband Edwin is not known. Ed Whipp died in 1958.

The outer cover of the book is in only moderate condition. It has a swirl pattern in dark red, pale blue, orange and white. The outer cover is torn and coming away from its supporting sheet. The book measures 8.5 inches wide x 6.5 inches tall (21.5 cm x 15.5 cm) and was constructed by binding together eight sub booklets. The paper is stout and the gall ink generally legible. I have attempted to recreate the layout of the left and right open pages. I have retained both 'd' and ' D' as capitals where they were used, and also ' ff ' as capital ' F'. Other letters are represented in 'Arial' typeface. It is not possible to adequately represent the monograms of the various bookkeepers. There were at least three different bookkeepers making entries.

The tithe headings are most difficult to interpret and list of my attempted readings is on a separate worksheet. I am not able at the present time to identify the nature of the individual tithes.

Comments I have made are in red italics.

Writing crossed out or overwritten is marked in blue with the replacement text in black.

The accompanying note e.g. (crossed out) is in red italics.

It is unfortunate but there is clear evidence that the names sequences do not follow the sequence of dwellings in any street.

The Tithe Book and a copy of this transcription was donated to the Cumbria Record Office and Local Studies Library, Scotch Street, Whitehaven in August 2000, where it is held with the St Bees parish archives in collection YPR 42
