The Ulverston and Corney Tysons

Several years back my wife and I were working on the family history of her family in Ulverston (1780 - 1850) and during the course of which we discovered that one of the sons married into one of the Ulverston Tyson families, a Mary Tyson b:1803. Whilst working through the families found in the1851 census I noticed that there were three Cumberland Tyson families resident in the town, two were from Corney and one who did not know in which parish he was born.

Recently I had a reason to investigate the Corney Tysons and re-found my paper on this family.

Tyson families in Corney did not put down any serious roots in the parish until the arrival of a Thomas Tyson (b:1751) in about 1773. He was the son of an Aaron Tyson of Millom. Thomas had sons William (b: 1773) who continued to farm at Kinmont as well as a Henry and Thomas. It was this William who had five sons Henry, Moses (b:1803), Matthew, Joseph and Isaac (b:1818) and it was this Moses and Isaac who started the Ulverston connection. None of these Corney Tysons left a Will to help the researcher.

It would appear that Moses Tyson (1803-1875) married twice and had two families, the first family of four children were born at Corney, and of these a John Tyson (b:1827) started the Kirkby Ireleth branch of the family; the second family of four children were living with Moses in the 1851 census of Ulverston & were resident at Ratten Row.

The last son Isaac Tyson (b:1818) had at least three children born in Ulverston, Isabella (b:1848) Margaret (b:1855) & William (b:1860), and the family were living at 23 Sunderland terrace at the time of the census.

BEEBY on 25 November 1738 in Millom, Cumb.

2. Aaron TYSON, son of Aaron TYSON and Agnes BEEBY, was born on 5 May 1743 in Millom, Cumb. He married Dorothy BENSON on 1 August 1769 in Millom.

Dorothy BENSON and Aaron TYSON had the following children:

3. William TYSON, son of Aaron TYSON and Agnes BEEBY, was born on 1 September 1745 in Millom.

4. Betty TYSON, daughter of Aaron TYSON and Agnes BEEBY, was born on 17 April 1748 in Millom.

5. Thomas TYSON, son of Aaron TYSON and Agnes BEEBY, was born on 9 November 1751 in Millom. He
married Ann DAWSON on 1 February 1773 in Millom. He died on 16 November 1832 in Corney, Cumb.

Died aged 89 years ( 1832-89 = 1743 ).

Ann DAWSON was born in 1750 (estimated). She and Thomas TYSON had the following children:

Third Generation

7. Hannah TYSON, daughter of Aaron TYSON and Dorothy BENSON, was born on 13 May 1770 in Millom,
Cumb. She died on 27 August 1777 in Millom.

8. Richard TYSON, son of Aaron TYSON and Dorothy BENSON, was born on 13 May 1770 in Millom. He
married Dorothy UNKNOWN in 1792 (estimated) in Not known.

Dorothy UNKNOWN and Richard TYSON had the following children:

12. Anthony TYSON, son of Richard TYSON and Dorothy UNKNOWN, was born on 30 April 1797 in Millom, Cumb.

13. Robert TYSON, son of Richard TYSON and Dorothy UNKNOWN, was born on 23 December 1798 in Millom. He married Sarah WHINFIELD on 17 April 1824 in Millom.

Sarah WHINFIELD was born on 13 May 1803 in Millom.

14. Aaron TYSON, son of Richard TYSON and Dorothy UNKNOWN, was born on 24 November 1800 in Thwaites, Cumb.

15. John TYSON, son of Richard TYSON and Dorothy UNKNOWN, was born on 29 January 1803 in Thwaites. He died on 6 December 1803 in Thwaites.

16. Henry TYSON, son of William TYSON and Isabella DIXON, was born on 6 August 1797 in Corney, Cumb.

17. Thomas TYSON, son of William TYSON and Isabella DIXON, was born on 10 September 1802 in Corney.
He died on 5 March 1803 in Corney.

18. Moses TYSON, son of William TYSON and Isabella DIXON, was born on 31 January 1803 in Corney. He married Eleanor UNKNOWN in 1822 (estimated) in Ulverston in Furness. He married Jane UNKNOWN in 1832 (approx.) in Not known. He appeared in the census in 1851 in Ulverston in Furness. He died on 29 October 1875 in Ulverston in Furness.

Eleanor UNKNOWN was born in 1805 (estimated) in Not known. She died before 1833 in Not known.
She and Moses TYSON had the following children:

25. Jane TYSON (1823- ). Jane was born on 20 April 1823 in Corney.
26. James TYSON (1825- ). James was born on 6 July 1825 in Corney. He married Jane
UNKNOWN in 1847 (approx.).
27. John TYSON (1827- ). John was born on 14 July 1827 in Corney. He married Mary
UNKNOWN in 1850 (approx.) in Not known. He appeared in the census in 1881 in Kirkby
Ireleth. In 1881 he was a Slate Quarrier in Kirkby Ireleth.
28. Ellen TYSON (1829- ). Ellen was born on 11 January 1829 in Corney.
29. Annabella TYSON (1831-1831). Annabella was born on 13 February 1831 in Corney. She
died on 19 March 1831 in Corney.

Jane UNKNOWN was born in 1817 (calculated) in Lancaster. She and Moses TYSON had the following
children:

19. Ann TYSON, daughter of William TYSON and Isabella DIXON, was born on 8 April 1806 in Corney. She died on 27 July 1823 in Corney.

20. Matthew TYSON, son of William TYSON and Isabella DIXON, was born on 23 August 1807 in Corney.

21. Isabella TYSON, daughter of William TYSON and Isabella DIXON, was born on 9 August 1809 in Corney.

22. Joseph TYSON, son of William TYSON and Isabella DIXON, was born on 6 March 1814 in Corney. He died on 24 June 1839 in Corney.

23. Hannah TYSON, daughter of William TYSON and Isabella DIXON, was born on 14 January 1816 in Corney. She died on 6 February 1817 in Corney.

24. Isaac TYSON, son of William TYSON and Isabella DIXON, was born on 11 January 1818 in Corney. He married Jane UNKNOWN in 1840 (estimated) in Not known. He appeared in the census in 1851 in
Ulverston in Furness. He appeared in the census in 1881 in Ulverston in Furness.

Jane UNKNOWN was born in 1820 (calculated) in Millom. She and Isaac TYSON had the following
children:

34. Isabella TYSON (1848- ). Isabella was born in 1848 in Ulverston in Furness.
35. Margaret TYSON (1855- ). Margaret was born in 1855 in Ulverston in Furness.
